The tropical cyclones are very powerful, dangerous and destructive. They are called by different names in different parts of the world. For example, hurricane in the Caribbean sea and USA; typhoons in Pacific ocean, China, japan cyclones in Bangladesh, India and Willy Willy in Australia. Their speed is very high from 180-400 km/hour. They destroy buildings, road, communication system, crops,live stock and human lives.
Floods are caused due to very heavy rainfall resulting in overflowing of rivers. The river water inundates roads, railways, agriculture fields, washes away homes and livestock. Floods are caused by natural as well as anthropogenic reasons. Building activities, construction of bridges, reservoirs, deforestation, and change in land use are some of the anthropogenic activities.
The condition of dryness or lack of rainfall for prolonged period is known as drought. It is directly related to one of the basic need of life i.e. water. Drought causes famine resulting in starvation of human and animal population. It may change biotic components of the natural ecosystem due to loss of animals and plant species.
Earthquake is a movement of ground surface which may shake buildings and create fissures on the ground.it is a form of energy of wave motion transmitted through the surface layer from a point of sudden energy release called focus. The magnitude or intensity is measured by Richter scale. The seismic waves which are more away from the source of earthquake are recorded with the help of device called seismometer. In Gujrat, on January 26,2001 the earthquake killed about 1 million people and resulted in property loss of 30,000 crore.
5) Bhopal disaster :
It occurred on 3 rd December, 1984.It is considered to be the worst industrial accident till today. Poisonous MIC(methyl isocyanate) vapours, leaked out in large amounts, from a pesticides manufacturing plant owned by a multinational company called union carbide. About 2,50,000 people were exposed to this gas and thousands of humans being and animals died after inhaling large quantities of this gas. Thos who had lesser exposure, sufferd with respiratory, eye, gastrointestinal, neuromuscular and gynaecological problems. The plants was located in the midst of a populated area.
