  • The oldest known mosquito with an anatomy similar to modern species was found in 79-million-year-old Canadian amber from the Cretaceous.


  • Scientists believe that mosquitoes originated in South Africa and eventually spread to the rest of the world. Mosquitoes have evolved to the point where there are approximately 2,700 different species of mosquitoes.


  •  Studies have revealed that mosquitoes are able to drink 3 times their own body weight in blood. Now that’s a lot!


  • Only female mosquito bites as our blood is essential to develop their eggs. A female mosquito will continue to bite and feed on blood until she is full. After they have consumed enough blood, the mosquito will rest for a couple of days (usually between 2-3) before laying her eggs.


  • Malaria infects around 250 million people each year worldwide and kills about one million, mostly children in Africa. About a fifth of those deaths can be attributed to counterfeit anti-malarial drugs.


  • These biting insects also mosquito have a very short life span. It is estimated that mosquitoes live less than 2 months!


  • They have receptors on their antennae that detect the carbon dioxide released when we exhale. Mosquitoes are attracted to the carbon dioxide, lactic acid and octenol found in our breath and sweat. They may have a preference for beer drinkers. Those plumes of CO2 rise into the air, acting as trails that the mosquitoes follow to find the source.

  • Adult mosquitoes range in length from ¼ – 3/8th of an inch; and have a narrow oval shaped body. They are mostly gray in color with white, silver, green or iridescent blue scales, they have white stripes across their abdomen.
