Jammu Kashmir

This state is a beautiful valley as its name suggests. In ancient times this place was well known as the Valley of Rishi Kashyap. From Kashyap Kashmir name gets introduced. In Sanskrit, K means water and Shmira means dried. Kashmir means dired water. Jammu name is introduced by the name of the ruler of that place. Jambu Lochan was a ruler in history. And now this beautiful state is known as Jammu Kashmir!


Punjab

Punjab is an Indo iranian word. 'Punj' means Five and 'Ab' means water. Punjab is known as 5 rivers land. 


Himachal Pradesh

Name itself suggests that there are Achal (Mountains) of Him(Ice). This name was also introduced by the Sanskrit word 'Him' as Ice and 'Achal' as Mountain. 


Haryana

Haryana word made up of two words as Hary and Ana. Hary means Vishnu or Krishna and Ana means asked to come. According to devotional stories, during the Mahabharata Period, Lord Krishna came here and that's why this state was named as Haryana.


Uttar Pradesh

Uttar pradesh means north state. This state is situated in the north direction. 


Uttarakhand /Uttaranchal

This state was introduced in 2000 by splitting of uttar pradesh state. The state Uttaranchal name means northern mountains. After some days it's name changed to Uttarakhand which means Northern land. 


Rajasthan

This word gets introduced from the Sanskrit word 'Raja'. In ancient times, this state was well known with the name Rajputana. Rajputana means city of Rajputs! 


Bihar

Bihar word gets introduced from Pali word Vihar. Vihar means lodging or camping. With time it changes from Vihar to Bihar. In ancient times, this place was well known for the lodging of Buddha Bhikshu.


West Bengal

Odisha

Chattisgarh

In earlier days this state was known as Daskhin Kosala. There are 36 forts present in this state and that's why it's known as Chhattisgarh. 


Madhya Pradesh

Gujrat

This is the land established by Gurjar in 7th and 8th century. This was known as the land of gurjars. 


Maharashtra
